The cine film for this race can be found here on youtube. The story below relating to the Guernsey interest.

Dave Dorey and Rob Elliott (pictured left in September 1977 after Church Walk) from the Sarnia Walking Club were two walkers hoping to secure a place in the Guernsey team for the 1978 Edmonton,Canada, Commonwealth Games. Both contested the English Commonwealth Games trial and National 30kms Championships held in Sheffield in a bid to try and beat the Guernsey qualifying time of 2 hours 34 minutes.

Dave Dorey, who had walked for Guernsey in the 1970 Games over 20 miles, had a 30kms best time of 2.42.38 set in 1975 and a 19.4 miles time of 2.46.47 in the Church to Church Walk. Probably now past his best he was clocking 30 kms walks around 2.45.22 to 2.49.

Rob Elliott , at nineteen years old had walked four times in Guernseyat 30kms with times ranging from 2.37.08 to 2.39. There was a realistic chance that with competition in the English trial he could get close to the qualifying time.

Another Guernsey walker Len Duquemin at 48 years old, representing Belgrave Harriers, had walked for Guernsey in the previous two Games, with a 6th position in 1970, was also walking but not with any intention of attacking 2.34.00. He called it a day during the race with a non finish. Both the others failed to beat 2.34.00 on the day, but could both be pleased by good walks on a not too easy three lap course.

Dorey had travelled up from London with walkers based there, whilst Elliott, who had based himself inYork for the week, had support from a van load of relations from the city as well as his father Mick.

From memory Rob (No 990 in green shorts, white top) at 1.00 time in video, remembers that he and Dorey (No 998 in green shorts, white top) were in a group of walkers holding positions in the mid 20`s of the field before Dorey dropped back. Rob had the company of two of the Isle of Man walkers he would face four years later in the Brisbane, Australia, Commonwealth Games as well as a future York Postal team mate Barry Graham.

Another memory from Elliott is of being encouraged by Bill Sutherland, who had medalled in the 1970 Games, as well as being aware of Guernsey walkers through his few races on the island. He, on encouraging Elliott in the latter stages had told him to “hang on to Adrian (James)”, on paper the faster walker. Elliott obliged by going straight past James without a second glance!

Rob crossed the line in 2.37.49 for 29th place, not far outside his personal best time with Dave 46th in 2.46.54. Both had walked close to their years best times.

This cine film is from the 1978 National 30 kms Championships held at Chapeltown, Sheffield. It was titled the First National 30kms and replaced the slightly longer 20 miles Championship. The walk also doubled up as the English Trial for the Commonwealth Games 30kms walk to be held shortly afterwards in Canada.

Olly Flynn, who went on to win the Commonwealth title, was first across the line in 2.21.54, ahead of Brian Adams 2.22.26 and Amos Seddon 2.25.26. Guernsey walker Rob Elliott was 29th in 2.37.49 and Dave Dorey 46th in 2.46.54. Guernsey had set a consideration time of 2.34.00 for the Commonwealth team.

A look down the finishers list for 1978 sees walkers who went on to the 1982 Games where Guernsey had an interest.

In 15th place in 2.34.13 was Steve Barry fromWales. He won the 1982 Games walk in 2.10.16.

Roger Mills (England) 4th in 2.27.11, 7th in 2.21.54 in 1982.

Graham Young 26th (Isle of Man) 2.37.39, 11th in 1982 in 2.27.04.

Rob Lambie (Isle of Man) 28th in 2.37.47, DQ in 1982.

Rob Elliott (Guernsey) 29th 2.37.49, 2.24.28 in 1982.

Paul Blagg (England) 38th in 2.43.21, 13th in 2.30.42 in 1982.

Murray Lambden (Isle of Man) 57th in 2.52.29, 8th in 2.22.18 in 1982

Future visiting Guernsey Church to Church walk winners seen are Ed Shillabeer, (No 263) green top, red shorts at 2.47 time on video and Peter Ryan (No 799) red and white vest at 2.05 time on video.

Stuart Le Noury smashed his personal best time for 10 miles by over four and a half minutes, when he dominated the small field of walkers competing from Albecq to the White Rock. In almost ideal winter conditions he was on his own from the start going through the half way point in 39.23. This time in itself was over two and a half minutes up on his best for a 5 miles walk. Inevitably slowing in the second half he crossed the line in 81.05, moving from 21st to 10th in the Guernsey All Time list.

Phil Lockwood walked to an easy second place, but well behind the winner. Rob Elliott, in third, who heads the All Time list, reproduced below, walked almost identical halfs to finish a further five minutes behind.

In the accompanying 5 miles walk, backmarker Kay Coulson had reason to be happy as she clipped seventeen seconds from her previous best. Winner of the 5 miles was Dave Dorey in just over an hour.

The next event is on Sunday January 29th at Delancey Park at 11.00 am. The event is in conjunction with the M & S sponsored Weight Wise Week organised by the Guernsey Sports Commision, in which women only get the chance to try out new sports. A free informal introduction to race walking / power walking is on offer with a chance to have a short race afterwards. Details from Jayne Le Noury, tel 246865.

Stuart Le Noury finished first in the 3,000 metres race but was pushed back to eight place in the Bob Wright Handicap Series section of the walk. Winner of this section was Jayne Le Noury who edged out Terry Bates by nine seconds, with Kay Coulson in third place. The current standings after five events in this section sees Phil Lockwood heading the list with 82 points, ahead of Stuart Le Noury and Carol Bates on 81. With five out of seven events to score, Jayne Le Noury currently in fifth place with 78 points can close the gap as she has already walked one race less than the top trio.

A good walk by Jayne in 20.12 saw her just beaten by Carol Bates as they finished first and second women across the line. Youngsters Sofia and Ellis Lockwood competed over the shorter distances of 1800 and 1400 metres respectively.

By taking part in the week we hope they enjoy it so much that they will want to continue on a regular basis. We would like you to offer a free taster session for women & girls during this week. If you are going to offer a session, we’d like to ensure that you have a planned pathway for keeping female “trialists” engaged after their taster session, and we intend to evaluate their participation and retention on an on-going basis.

Stuart Le Noury ends year on a high

Race winner Stuart Le Noury ended Sarnia Walking Clubs 2011 programme with a new personal best time of 23.29, beating his best set in January by 39 seconds. He finished well ahead of second man home Phil Lockwood. Kevin Le Noury got the better of wife Jayne to take third place. A small field of six walkers was the result of usual walkers being off island or work tied in the lead up to the Christmas holidays.

The club still put on races for the imperial distances so walkers can compare their times with those set by club walkers of the past. In the past there were more walks at the 3 miles distance than at 5,000 metres (170 odd metres longer). Stuarts time today compares well with his recent 5,000 metres best of 24.24. The 3 miles performance being on a par with his 5,000 metres and gets him into the Guernsey Top 10 at 3 miles.

Rankings for both 3 miles and 5,000 metres are reproduced below.

The next walk is on Sunday January 8th 2012 at 9.30 am at Footes Lane. The distance is 3,000 metres and is the fifth race in the Bob Wright Handicap Series. Details from Jayne Le Noury, tel 246865.

The Sarnia Walking Clubs annual time trial up the Val des Terres hill has been held since 1966 when John Moullin recorded the fastest time of the day clocking 4.24, a record time which was to stand until Mike Scamell from Newham AC equalled it in 1977. Sarnia club champions Mick Elliott and Rob Waterman between these years had recorded 4.27 and 4.34 respectively, still away from that early best time. A year later in 1978 nineteen year old Rob Elliott broke Scamell`s time with a 4.20 time, smashing it in 1980 with a 4.07, a record which still stands today. In 1982 and 1983, first Rob Elliott and then Mark Elliott won the shield in a time of 4.13, before Mark Elliott at the age of 21 retained the shield , only one second outside the record.

In 1988 Carl Thomson recorded 4.16, followed by a 4.18 a year later in an effort to get close to the best two times. Years later Mark Elliott in a return to the sport stormed up the hill in 4.10 (1997), followed by a 4.17 in 1998. The last five years have seen only one mens winner in Stuart Le Noury, first few wins only seconds outside the 5 minutes barrier, with a best of 4.43 in 2008. It will take sub 5 minutes to win this year, with hopefully Jason Le Noury and Phil Lockwood heading for the top spots.Mens Hill Climb winners listed below. Jane Rowlinson is the current Womens Shield winner which was introduced in 1993. If walking, Jane should be challenged by the in form Carol Bates and Jayne Le Noury.

Bob Wright Handicap Series Race 4

2 kilometres road walk

Pleinmont, Guernsey

Terry Bates (pictured) won the fourth race in the Bob Wright Handicap Series with a six second advantage over second man home Kevin Le Noury, in a two kilometre road walk held at Pleinmont. The out and back course is not helpful towards fast times but Terry still managed to add another Guernsey Age Best time to his list. Since July he has claimed six new bests usually at the expense of past record holder Mick Le Sauvage.

A good walk from Kevin Le Noury saw him overtake wife Jayne in the latter stages to finish eight seconds up at the finish. A close affair in the middle of the field was won by Dave Dorey, who finished only strides ahead of Stuart Le Noury and Carol Bates. Stuart and Carol made light of the ups and downs of the course to remove seven and six seconds respectivley from their previous best times.

After four races in the seven race series, Stuart Le Noury (68 pts) leads narrowly from Phil Lockwood (66 pts) and Carol Bates (64 pts). Race winner Terry Bates is next on 59.5 pts. Back in fifth place, but having walked a race less is Jayne Le Noury on 58 points. The series sees walkers count their best five walks from the seven walks on the fixture list.

The next walk is the Le Val des Terres Hill Climb over a distance of 815 metres, starting at 9.00 am on Sunday December 11th. Newcomers welcome. Details from Jayne Le Noury, tel 246865.
