Thomson Close To Personal Best

Carl Thomson finished in 35th position in a field of 55, in the 20 kilometres mens road walk held recently in Lugano, Switzerland. His time of 100.27 was just over a minute outside of his Personal Best time set way back in 1989 in Guernsey. The last days preparation for the race was hindered with a sleepness night and was unable to do himself full justice, feeling a 96 minutes time is within him.
A steady first half saw him clock 50.12 at 10 kms, with a slight drop of pace to 15 kms, before a 24.53 last 5 kilometres indicated he has a strength in the latter half of a race of this distance. It was only last year that he was clocking 104 minutes and his winter training has already brought him back close to his best. It must now only be a matter of time before he gets under 100 minutes again.
The walk attracted a host of International walkers in this now popular event, with many using it as a race to gain times for International selection in events later this year. The outstanding winner was Yargunkin from Russia who finished with a time of 81.40, 40 seconds ahead of Belarus walker Trotski.
