Thomson claims silver in National Championship

Carl Thomson, Sarnia Walking Club, claimed 2nd place in the UKA/RWA National 20 kilometres Road Walking Championships held at Shrewsbury Sports Village over Easter. The field of walkers were competing on a purpose built cycling racecourse over 1000 metres, meaning 20 laps for his event. Carl intended to start positively after his recent disappointement in Switzerland and quickly settled into sub 100 minutes pace.
The two leaders, Luke Finch (Colchester) and Ben Wears (Redcar) were quickly away, operating at 88 minutes pace with Thomson and Evenett from Redcar behind at a distance. The man expected to be between these two groups was Scott Davis (Ilford) with a recent best time of 94 minutes, but he had been a late starter due to hold ups on his journey and so never got into the reckoning, but still walked.
By the half way mark Evenett had moved away, with Thomson seemingly going through a bad patch but still walking just over 49 minutes. He was well on target to break his old Personal Best time set in 1990.
Thomson usually has as a strong second half and with plenty of roadside encouragement soon caught Evenett, moving into second place. He was well down on leader Finch, who was now out on his own with Wears having been disqualified during the early stages of the race. Thomson moved away quite easily from Evenett and kept up the pace until the final four kilometres when he started slipping outside five minute laps. Each of the final laps saw him get closer to 100 minute pace, but he held form well to cross the line in 99.50 not far off his best of 99.10, on a warm day and testing course.
Luke Finch crossed the line first in 88.30, well ahead of Thomson in second and Evenett who held on for third place.dsc_0038-2
