Sarnia Walking Club`s (team photo left Jason, Kevin and Phil) Jason Le Noury came away happy from the Race Walking Association National 10 miles Championship held at Lee Valley near Enfield. He crossed the line in 9th place in 85.02, clipping two seconds off his personal best time set in the same event last year. Having started the race short of training, due to recent injuries, he started off steadily, then got through a patch of sore shins before moving up through the field. A mid race battle with Trevor Jones of Steyning, saw them both trying hard to close the gap on walkers just in front of them, before Jason lost ground in the final one mile lap. Jason, thinking in kilometres rather than miles, passed the 10 kilometres point in slightly under 52 minutes, his best time at that distance for a good few months.
Phil Lockwood, finished the race in 17th position in 96.16. An early warning seemed to unsettle him a little but he stuck to the task in hand and despite looking tired for much of the latter half of the race, held his position well. With Carl Thomson now retired and Rob Elliott entered but not starting due to a recurring hamstring problem, the Sarnia Walking Club would be unlikely to emulate last years team bronze. Stalwart Kevin Le Noury, only lasted 7 miles before suffering the “red disc” from the judge for the first time in his career.
The race winner, in a time of 73.49, was Darryl Stone of Steyning beating Scott Davis of Ilford by 21 seconds. Third place went to Tommy Taylor of Birchfield in 75.08.
