For the first time in many years the Sarnia Walking Club held a 10 miles event from Albecq to the White Rock. In cold and windy conditions, Stuart Le Noury (pictured coming up to 9 miles) took the lead from the start, closely followed by Phil Lockwood. At the two miles point Le Noury held a fifty yards lead, going through in 17.30. At the half way point at Lancresse he had increased his lead to 46 seconds as the clock showed 44.17 to Lockwoods 45.01. The lead was further increased over the next few miles, until Phil Lockwood worked hard along the seafront in the final few miles to close the gap agian, but not by enough as Stuart Le Noury finished in 89.11. Phil took second place a further 33 seconds behind in 89.44.
Phil removed two and a half minutes off his previous best time set a few years ago in the National 10 miles Championships. Le Noury in his first actual 10 miles event surpassing his best time at the slightly shorter 15 kilometres distance by a good few minutes.
Well down in third place was evergreen walker Kevin Le Noury, who can draw consolation that his best time set over thirty years ago, is a few seconds quicker than Lockwoods finishing time today.
There was a close race for first place in the womens walk as Jayne Le Noury outsprinted Jane Rowlinson by a few strides. Jayne Le Noury set off at her usual steady pace to find herself a minute behind Jane Rowlinson at two miles. By halfway the gap had reduced to half a minute as Jane Rowlinson went past in 58.32. Over the next few miles the two were getting closer and closer until they were shoulder to shoulder. The two were locked together for much of the final miles until a determined sprint saw Le Noury over the line first in 1.57.59, two minutes better than her previous best time set back in 1996.
Two walkers raced the last 5 miles of the course, with Carol Bates winning in 58.20. Rose Druckes was not far behind with a time of 59.38, which beats her old Guernsey age best time.
The next walk is on Sunday February 6th at Delancey Park. The event is the 6th race in the Bob Wright Handicap series over 10 kilometres, starting at 9.30 am. Futher details from Jayne Le Noury, tel 246865.
