Good efforts by new walkers
The Sarnia Walking Clubs efforts to recruit new walkers saw eight new people try out the sport in the clubs 30 minutes track walk on a bright and sunny October morning. Walkers were to walk as many laps as possible in the allotted time. Jane Rowlinson managed 4, 400 metres in 32.34 to complete the most laps. Newcomer Veronica Cross competed in her first ever walk, followed by youngster Sofia Lockwood, Heather Le Sauvage and Ellis Lockwood (pictured left).
Adrian Le Sauvage, who last walked many years ago as a youngster walked with daughter Caitlin for 4 laps and retired. Caitlin found renewed enery after a short stop and carried on for the full thirty minutes.
Ellis and Sofia (below right leading Caitlin), looked the part during the walk, having listened no doubt to regular walker and father Phil Lockwood. Two very young competitors, Charlie and Jasmine Lockwood walked two laps and retired for a respectable distance of 800m.
After the event, the regular racewalkers competed over the rarely walked distance of 1,500 metres. Winner was Stuart Le Noury, walking not quite as fast as in his recent 7 minute mile, being 110 metres further than his effort in the 1,500 metres, to create a new Guernsey Record time of 6.35.3. This beat the old official record of 6.58 set in 1976 by Mick Elliott. Stuarts brother Jason had recorded 6.45.8 three years ago, but no record then due to insufficent judges.
Second home was Terry Bates in 8.20 and for him another new age best time.
The next race is on Sunday October 16th at Saumarez Park. It is the second race in the Bob Wright Handicap Series over a distance of 5 kilometres, with the first walker starting at 9.00 am. Details from Jayne Le Noury, tel 246865.
