Sarnia Walking Club
7 miles road walk
Albecq to North Side, Guernsey
Swift time for Carl Thomson
Making the most of a welcome break from the recent wind and rain, ten walkers set out from Albecq to race the 7 miles to North Side, St Sampsons. Stuart Le Noury and Carl Thomson hit the front from the start, with Carl soon to dominate after the opening few miles.Taking advantage of the gentle down hill start Carl reeled off mile splits of 7.36, 7.39 and 7.51 before slowing to just over 8 minute miles. He unofficially clocked himself at 49.10 for 10 kilometres before hitting the head wind in the final mile from La Turquie, through Bordeaux and onto the finish at North Side. Crossing the line in 54.57, he broke the old Guernsey Age Best time set by Len Duquemin, many years ago. Times recorded on his garmin were unofficial at 7.36, 7.39, 7.51, 7.58, 8.00, 8.06 (49.10 10kms) and 7.43.
Len Duquemin set the previous 7 miles best, in a 7 miles race, in Vauxhall, London in 1978 clocking 57.50.
Of note though is that he would have gone through that point in around 56.25 in a longer 10 miles event in Guernsey when he clocked 80.36.
A good race from Stuart Le Noury, who was celebrating his 27th birthday, resulted in a new personal best 7 miles time of 57.30. A new best despite a long day at work the day before and not finishing until gone 11.00 pm! Phil Lockwood finished third in 62.52. Sean Pender, a regular visitor from Enfield finished in fourth place in 71.29, overtaking local walker Rob Elliott with around a mile to go. Kevin Le Noury showed wife Jayne a clean pair of heels as he finished almost two minutes in front of her.
Jayne Le Noury, with another good walk finished only half a minute outside her best ever time in 7th place. Mick Le Sauvage got to within a few seconds of his own age best time with an 81.03 clocking. Bringing up the rear of the field relative newcomer Allan Harris had the experienced Dave Dorey in his sights.
Before the race, Sean Pender, President of the Southern Area RWA was given the task of drawing a name out of the hat for the Sarnia Walking Clubs one allocated place in the 2013 London Marathon. Stuart Le Noury`s name came out first so he will represent us in London next year……….in running mode.
The next walk is on Sunday December 2nd at Footes Lane. The distance is 2,000 metres and is the 4th race in the Bob Wright Handicap Series. Start time is 9.30 am. Details from Jayne Le Noury
