Lucky win for Elliott

Rob Elliott has hundreds of race walk victories to his name over his long career, but this latest one was probably the luckiest of them all, as he overhauled the long time leader Phil Lockwood in the final hundred metres of the Heritage Group Championships over 5,000 metres. The unlucky Lockwood had built up a gap of never more than 15 seconds over Elliott in the first half of the race, going through 1,000 metres in 5.21 and 3,000 metres in 16.33. Elliott, hoping to get under 28 minutes passed 3,000 metres ten seconds behind and planned to chase Lockwood down in the final laps.

As the gap came down Elliotts bid faltered as his hamstring started to twinge so played safe and held back a bit.
With a lap to go and the end in sight, he increased the effort to keep the gap the same, but without warning Lockwood hit trouble with 250 metres remaining. His back problem of recent weeks first slowed him down, then threw him into a stagger before coming to a halt in the final straight as Elliott went passed. A few words of encouragement from Elliott and Allan Harris who was being lapped gave him the impetutus to carry on and cross the line 43 seconds down on Elliotts winning time of 28.04.

Third place went to Terry Bates in just over thirty minutes.
In the womens Championship the winner once again was Jayne Le Noury in 36.29, ahead of Kay Coulson.
The walk of the day was by Peter Beckerleg, who set a new personal best time of 33.45 which gave him victory in the accompanying Jubilee Handicap SWC Championship in which he leads from Rob Elliott and Mick Le Sauvage. A close race in the middle of the field saw Kevin Le Noury get the better of Dave Doey who finished only strides ahead of Beckerleg, with Le Sauvage close behind.

Jubilee Handicap: 1st Beckerleg 38.15, 2nd Dorey 38.44, 3rd Le Sauvage 39.11, 4th K Le Noury 39.28, 5th Elliott 39.34, 6th J Le Noury 40.29, 7th Coulson 40.45, 8th T Bates 41.38, 9th Harris 41.40, 10th Lockwood 42.17.
The next walk is on Sunday June 30th. It is the 7th race in the Heritage Championships over a distance of 20 kilometres.Start time is 8.30 am at North Side.
