Sarnia Walking Club

3 kilometres road walk

Les Amarreurs, Vale, Guernsey

Family Double for the Martins

A good sized field of 17 walkers raced the Sarnia Walking Clubs 3 kilometres road walk at Les Amarreurs used as a warm up event for the Church to Church walk being held two days later. In hot conditions visiting walker Malcolm Martin and local Phil Lockwood headed the race from the start, with Martin pulling away in the second lap to win by eleven seconds, crossing the line in 16.15.

Fighting for third place were Jim Ball and Rob Elliott, who were only strides apart for all of the race, even at one point with views to try and catch the leaders. Come the finish and there was only the width of a vest between them as they claimed an equal third place in 16.42.

Terry Bates had a close race with long distance specialist Frans Leijtens, who showed a turn of short distance speed to finish in 17.52, only 16 seconds behind Bates. Michael Harran set a new Allcomers age best time with his 18.34 in 7th place, with Angela Martin doing likewise with her 19.40, finishing close to local walker Kevin Le Noury and his 19.34. Angela, being the first woman to finish gave her and winning husband Malcolm a family double win.

Local Peter Beckerleg chipped a few seconds off his personal best time in 19.43 in closely following Angela. Regular visitor Dave Hoben got the better of local Dave Dorey in a time just over twenty minutes, with Mick Le Sauvage a few strides down.

Back in 14th place and with probably the performance of the day was relative newcomer Marie Macdonald who broke her recent personal best time by a minute. Second local woman home was Jayne Le Noury in 21.38, followed by Kay Coulson. At the back of the field, Frans Leijtens father Jo strolled around the walk in 27.18

There were around a dozen onlookers from the UK watching or officiating, some giving the race a miss and saving themselves for Sundays 19.4 miles walk. Thanks to the support of regular walk supporters, Chris and Jonathan Hobbs, Sean Pender, Stuart Le Noury, Colin Bradley. Trevor and Linda Mc Dermot, Pam and Eric Horwill, Sailash Shah and the recently married Simone Ball.
