Below is the annual report for the Sarnia Walking Club for 2014

Sarnia Walking Club

2014 Report

The year 2014 marked the clubs 50th anniversary since its formation in December 1964. The occasion was marked by a breakfast at the Half Moon cafe after the annual Val des Terres Hill Climb, complete with birthday cake, supplied by Dave Dorey.

The club held the usual races throughout the year with 12 walkers scoring in the Heritage Club Championships and 19 in the Bob Wright Handicap Series which is open to all to compete in. Both these numbers were slightly down on the year before.

We have had at least six new walkers come into our races during the year and racing more than a couple of times, excluding those from the Church to Church entries.

Interestingly, most of these have been woman and one now hopes for some good races between them in 2015.

The Bob Wright Series continues to attract “non members” to the handicapped races, with an “unattached” walker taking the title this year through Karen Farman.

Once again, Jayne and Stuart Le Noury won the Heritage club championships with Kevin Le Noury taking the handicapped section.

The traditional club events continued like the Eric Waldron, Chilcott Cup, Rocquaine Regatta, Hill Climb and the team events with the Philadelphia, Graham Mann and Peter Kendal trophies

An additional trophy this year was the Sean Pender Trophy donated by the then Southern RWA President and regular visitor Sean Pender. The race was a handicapped 2,000 metres walk open to all and hopefully in future drawing in newcomers. It worked this year with newcomer Marie Macdonald taking first place.

The highlight of our year is the Church to Church walk which again attracted overseas walkers and a field of 25 walkers, as well as some overseas officials and spectators. In addition to this 17 walkers took part in the 3 kilometres warm up race the same weekend.

Past glories for the club walkers were relived during the year with Len Duquemin featuring in a Guernsey Press article on his 1970 Commonwealth Games 6th place.

Rob Elliott went to a luncheon in London to celebrate the home countries representatives over the years in the Commonwealth Games, with Guernsey and Sarnia Walking Club getting mentioned in some of the speeches.

The club were represented in running events throughout the year with some members opting to run and others walking. Jason Le Noury took part in the longest as he completed the London Marathon

The club held a coaching weekend during the year with Chris Hobbs from England leading the sessions which involved a race on the Friday evening and track session and exercises and warm up / downs on the Sunday. An informative weekend for those involved.

Club member Terry Bates continues to walk in the Isle of Man as well as on his visits back to the island.

I end this report on a sad note as 2014 marked the passing away of past member Dave Johnson, a stalwart walker for thirty years.
