Beckerleg strengthens challenge for Bob Wright Series win

Second place Peter Beckerleg strengthened his challenge for the overall win in the Bob Wright Handicap Series with one race to go. He was beaten on the day only by Stuart Le Noury who walked from starting last to crossing the line first with an actual time of 7.28.

Third place went to Kay Coulson a few seconds down on second place.

After two race discards are taken into consideration in the seven race series Beckerleg and Donna Allan are favourites with Stuart Le Noury and Rob Elliott also in with a shout should they finish the last race well up the field.

The last event is a 5 mile race from Lancresse to White Rock in February.

Winner Stuart Le Noury won the inaugural Richmond Trophy for 2016 based on the years performances in all local races, presented at the recent club dinner and presentation.

Close race for the women

Whilst Stuart Le Noury was enjoying an easy win over one mile, the leading women were involved in a close race as newcomer Donna Allan, who competed in her first race only weeks ago in the Church to Church walk, got the better of Marie Macdonald by one second.

In the process Marie improved on her best time and lost out on the Guernsey age best time to Donna. In third place and close to her best was Kay Coulson. Young Ellis Lockwood walked a good race at the back of the field in 11.39.

The next race is on Sunday October 2nd at Saumarez Park at 9.00 am . It is the first race in the Bob Wright Handicap Series over a distance of 5 kilometres. The series consists of races between 1 mile and 10 kilometres on a handicap start basis, giving all a chance to cross the line first . Newcomers are welcome. There are seven races in the series between October and February with five to score for the final points table. Details from Jayne Le Noury lenouryjedburgh@cwgsy.net.

Jayne Le Noury wins penultimate race in series

With one race to go in the series, the first two home, Jayne Le Noury and Kay Coulson pushed themselves well into contention to take the title in the last race. Off together in the handicapped mile event, Jayne Le Noury soon opened up a gap and with her best walk for some time came home in 11.05, seven seconds ahead of Kay.

A fast finishing Jason Le Noury took third place with an actual time of 7.25, recording the fastest time of the day ahead of brother Stuarts 7.38.

The last race takes place on Sunday February 14th over a distance of 5 miles, starting at Lancresse and finishing at North Beach. Start time is 9.30 am. Details from Jayne Le Noury, lenouryjedburgh@cwgsy.net

The club held a minutes silence in memory of past walker Rob Waterman who passed away recently at the age of 76. Rob was the record holder of the one mile walk back in 1970 with his 6.52 road mile. He was a member of the club in its early days and represented Guernsey in the 1974 Commonwealth Games in New Zealand in the 20 miles walk. He won the Church to Church walk in 1970 and was coach to the walkers in the Commonwealth Games held that year.

Rob Waterman, five times the Club Champion, was one of the first members of the Sarnia Walking Club. He started walking in the mid 60`s taking in the Church walk as well as racing in the GIAAC walks in 1964, improving steadily and helping the SWC to their team win in the “Garnet” 10 miles in 1967.

From 1968 to 1971 Rob was the Guernsey Sarnia Walking Club Champion, as well as winning the Eric Waldron Trophy 3 times, the 7 mile Chilcott Cup in under 54 minutes, the Val Des Terres Hill Climb, the North Regatta walk and a West Show 20 miles.

In 1969 he walked in the 6 mile Chippenham event, and scored the 2nd of his 4 wins in the 5 miles Sark walk. Sark being a car free island a short boat trip from Guernsey.

In 1970 he failed to gain selection for the 20 miles Commonwealth Games walk but went as coach to the 3 selected walkers and on his return scored his only victory in the Church Walk beating Dave Dorey by 4 and a half minutes in 2 hours 52 minutes 53 seconds. Photos left finishing in 1970 Church to Church and right at Longfrie in 1971 Church to Church.

FullSizeRender FullSizeRender-3

In 1971 with junior walkers coming through Rob organized regular training sessions for the youngsters as well as helping out future walkers such as Rob Elliott.

During 1973 Rob won the 50 kms walk in just outside 5 hours and had a win in the West Show 20 miles followed by 3rd behind visitors Dave Rosser and Guernsey’s John Moullin in the Church to Church walk in a personal best of 2.51.27 which was good enough for him to gain selection for the 1974 New Zealand Commonwealth Games, backing up his races earlier in the year including winning the bronze medal in the Hampshire 10 miles walk.

Almost finishing his preparations for Christchurch in the early months of 74 Rob walked under 46 minutes in the popular 6 miles Chippenham walk in the October of 73.

Rob walked to an 11th place in the 20 miles walk at the Games recording a time of 3 hours 00 mins 14 secs, slower than his best but a fine walk in the heat of New Zealand.

On return his domination of island walks was coming to an end with the emergence of Mick Elliott who was improving by every race up to 10 miles in distance and young Andy Le Heron.  Rob lost out on the championship to Elliott, and in his last Church walk finished 3rd.

One of his final races was in the Chippenham to Calne 6 miles where the SWC were victorious where he finished in 8th position, one behind Elliott in 47 minutes. Rob retired soon afterwards from the walking scene leaving behind him impressive times including:

1 mile 6.52

3 kms 13.42

5 kms 23.05

7 miles in 53.42

10 miles 77.34

20 kms 103.54

20 miles 2.52.48

50 kms 5.00.40.

The 6 miles Milestones Walk was introduced by Waterman and is known as the Rob Waterman Trophy, whist the long established Hill Climb Shield, still competed for today was made by Rob.

Third Philadelphia win in a row for Elliott

For the third year in a row Rob Elliott was part of the winning team in the Canaccord Genuity Philadelphia one mile handicap road walk. On this occasion he was paired with Dave Dorey, who finished in second place in the handicapped walk, backed up with Elliotts 8.00 time, which was his best for many a year.

This time broke the 8.12 that Terry Bates set back in 2006 as an M55

Kay Coulson, who seems to relish this race, smashed her old personal best time set in this race last year and finished in first place for the third year with an actual time of 10.37, taking 41 seconds off her previous best time. Good walks by Dorey and Kevin Le Noury gave them the second and third places individually. In Doreys case helping to secure the team win over Le Noury and team mate Olga Sinkevica.

The fastest time of the day was by Stuart Le Noury in 7.24, whilst Olga Sinkevica recorded the fastest womens time  with 9.58.

The next walk is on Sunday March 29th from Albecq to North Side at 9.30 am. The distance is 7 miles for annual Chilcott Cup. Details from Jayne Le Noury lenouryjedburgh@cwgsy.net
