Handicapper pipped on the line

Club handicapper Mick Le Sauvage, who had moved into the lead in the middle section of the 5 miles road walk from Lancresse to North Beach, lost his lead in the final few strides to back marker Stuart Le Noury. Raced in windy conditions, with strong headwinds slowing the competitors, fastest walker of the day Stuart Le Noury with a 21 minutes handicap, looked ahead and still with a big gap to close with quarter of a mile to go, ground out the final sprint to take the win in an actual time of 42.42. Emulating his win from the corresponding race held last year Stuart heads the Bob Wright Series by a point from father Kevin. Once race discards are counted then Peter Beckerleg, third across the line brings himself into contention for a series win with one race to go.

Beckerleg leads the way

Race winner Peter Beckerleg, easily held off the faster finishing Stuart Le Noury in the 2 kilometres out and back course held at Pleinmont. The windy conditions added to the hilly course made for a harder than usual race. Kevin Le Noury, losing out second place in the closing stages to son Stuart, heads the series with a one point advantage over Stuart moving into 2020 when the series resumes.

Fourth place went to Kay Coulson, ahead of Rob Elliott. Jayne Le Noury, still troubled by injury, held off Donna Allan for sixth. Stuart Le Noury had the fastest time of the day with 9.41, followed by Donna Allan and Rob Elliott with 12.13 and 12.16 respectively, both well down on what can normally be expected of them.

Jayne wins fathers trophy

Jayne Le Noury won the Bob Wright handicap series trophy, named in honour of her father for the 5th time, after the seven race series finished with a 3 kilometres walk at Cambridge Park. In good weather conditions for the time of year, she couldn’t end the series with a race win but did enough to keep the eventual second placed walker overall a few points adrift. Stuart Le Noury, second overall didn’t quite walk through the field from his back marker position but had a good go at it managing third place in the race, falling short of catching race winner Peter Beckerleg and Mick Le Sauvage.

Stuarts time of 14.36 was the quickest actual time of the day, passing second and third quickest Rob Elliott, 17.12 and Donna Allan 17.43 in the final 100 metres. There were plenty of positional changes in the final 100 or so metres with six walkers finishing within 21 seconds of each other. Five of those finishing in a 9 second gap.

Race winner Stuart Le Noury walked through the field of walkers from his back marker position to claim a new personal best over the 5 miles distance. On a crisp winters morning with very little wind, he walked an actual time of 41.03 narrowly beating his old best time. Defending series winner Kevin Allan held on to second place holding off wife Donna who finished nine seconds behind. Donnas time of 47.49 was not too far off her time set last year which was the best time set by a Guernsey woman.

Rob Elliott, back in fourth closed down on Donna Allan who had a minutes handicap start in the first few miles, but could not close the final 10 or so seconds. As the gap slowly decreased Stuart Le Noury went past Elliott and then Donna, who upped her speed to hang on to Le Noury for a while and reopen the gap.

Fifth place went to Kevin Le Noury ahead of Kay Coulson who just managed to break the hour barrier as did Peter Beckerleg in seventh. Mick Le Sauvage was next home and edged closer to his 8,000th mile of race walking. Phil Lockwood brought the race to an end with his 57.33 clocking.

With one race to go and allowing for the two races that can be discarded in the seven race series, Jayne Le Noury, who had a very rare “did not finish” for todays race is set up as favourite with son Stuart the nearest challenger.

Third win in a row for Jayne

Jayne Le Noury heads the seven race handicap series after five of the races with her third win in a row. Over a distance of 5 kilometres walked in windy conditions, with the worst of it head on, it was tough going on the long straight section of the three lap course. Set off first Jayne was not likely to be caught as the race neared its conclusion, as she crossed the line in 38.56, almost a minute ahead of Donna Allan in second place. Third place went to Peter Beckerleg. Rob Elliott, back in sixth place walked the fastest time of the day with his 29.38, ahead of Donna Allan in 30.20.
