Beckerleg leads the way

Race winner Peter Beckerleg, easily held off the faster finishing Stuart Le Noury in the 2 kilometres out and back course held at Pleinmont. The windy conditions added to the hilly course made for a harder than usual race. Kevin Le Noury, losing out second place in the closing stages to son Stuart, heads the series with a one point advantage over Stuart moving into 2020 when the series resumes.

Fourth place went to Kay Coulson, ahead of Rob Elliott. Jayne Le Noury, still troubled by injury, held off Donna Allan for sixth. Stuart Le Noury had the fastest time of the day with 9.41, followed by Donna Allan and Rob Elliott with 12.13 and 12.16 respectively, both well down on what can normally be expected of them.

Stuart cruises to win

Stuart Le Noury cruised to victory in the Sarnia Walking Clubs evening race over the two lap Amarreurs course. Club members were joined by competitors from overseas who will be walking the Church to Church walk a few days later.

Stuart, with poor preparation for the race, only made the start with minutes to go, then handicapped himself with a quick visit to the roadside toilet en route to his 16.03 clocking. Donna Allan in second place just over a minute behind had the close company of Jim Ball from Southampton for half the race with Rob Elliott close behind. Donna easily pulled away in the latter stages whilst Elliott caught Ball for equal third place.

Kevin Le Noury held off fellow club member Peter Beckerleg by 26 seconds with visitor Stephen Cartwright a further four seconds behind in 20.31. Regular visitor David Hoben recorded 21.34, ahead of Sarnia stalwarts, Mick Le Sauvage, Dave Dorey and Jayne Le Noury.

Back in 12th place, and in his first event for 12 years,  was one time Sarnia member Colin Bradley from Wales, who has been a regular competitor to both walks and runs in Guernsey for many years. He now walks aided by sticks but decided to relinquish his judging duties and walked the course in a satisfying 31 minutes dead. In his prime he walked the distance in 13 minutes.

Back to their roots

Stuart Le Noury walked to a win over Rob Elliott lapping him on the line in the process as he finished in 15.33 at Cambridge Park over 3,000 metres. Phil Lockwood took third place ahead of a close race for fourth between Peter Beckerleg and Kevin Le Noury.  Peter holding the edge throughout most of the race and holding his challenger off by a second.

Leading woman was Kay Coulson in 22.25 ahead of Jayne Le Noury. For two of the walkers it was a return to the grass track at Cambridge Park after a gap of over 50 years. Making use of the temporary track whilst the Footes Lane track is being renovated and moving off the park paths, Masters walkers Dave Dorey, well into his 70s and Mick Le Sauvage almost touching 80 years old, went back to their track roots with Dave Dorey recalling the days when Sarnia Walking Club used the track for their ‘One Hour” walks amongst others.

Sean Pender Trophy

2,000 metres track handicap

Lockwood wins the Sean Pender Trophy ( Phil left in photo with Dave Dorey, President.

Phil Lockwood improved on his second place of last year as he crossed the line first in the annual Sean Pender Trophy handicap walk over 2,000 metres. A good performance by him, with his best time for three years, was too good for second placed Peter Beckerleg who finished 12 seconds down. A close race for third was won by scratch walker Dave Dorey from last walker to start Stuart Le Noury. The fast finishing Stuart falling short by only a second to finish in fourth place. His fastest time of the day was only a second down on his 2018 performance.

Kevin Le Noury finished in fifth place with Rob Elliott striding past Jayne Le Noury in the final 30 metres. Elliott claimed a new Guernsey age best for the distance on the track, but still down on the time set by Terry Bates in a road walk.

Thanks go to the UK based Sean Pender for his continued support of his trophy in providing the leading men and women with medals and prizes.

This was the final walk for some time at this venue with the track due to be upgraded over the summer months and extended to 8 lanes.

Elliott and Allan open Championships with a win.

Rob Elliott opened up the Sarnia Walking Club 2019 Championship with a winning 28.49 clocking over 5 kilometres, ahead of second placed and leading woman Donna Allan with 30.58. Elliott, celebrating his birthday and moving up into the M60 age group, surprised himself with his best time for three years and in the process broke the Guernsey age best time set by Terry Bates back in 2011. A seven minute dead time for the first of the four laps gave him a good start which was followed by laps of 7.13, 7.19 and 7.17.

Second and third places were taken by walkers who have entered marathons in the next few months, second placed Donna in London and third placed Phil Lockwood in Brighton. Fourth place went to Kevin Le Noury ahead of Kay Coulson who claimed the handicap win. Next home was Mick Le Sauvage , one race away from his 8,000 miles milestone with Dave Dorey bringing home the field.

Kevin Allan and Jayne Le Noury both succumbed to injuries and completed around half the distance.

Jayne wins fathers trophy

Jayne Le Noury won the Bob Wright handicap series trophy, named in honour of her father for the 5th time, after the seven race series finished with a 3 kilometres walk at Cambridge Park. In good weather conditions for the time of year, she couldn’t end the series with a race win but did enough to keep the eventual second placed walker overall a few points adrift. Stuart Le Noury, second overall didn’t quite walk through the field from his back marker position but had a good go at it managing third place in the race, falling short of catching race winner Peter Beckerleg and Mick Le Sauvage.

Stuarts time of 14.36 was the quickest actual time of the day, passing second and third quickest Rob Elliott, 17.12 and Donna Allan 17.43 in the final 100 metres. There were plenty of positional changes in the final 100 or so metres with six walkers finishing within 21 seconds of each other. Five of those finishing in a 9 second gap.
