Donna Allan breaks the hour barrier

Donna Allan had the walk of the day as she smashed the hour barrier for the 10 kilometres road walk held over the four lap course at North Side. With race winner Stuart Le Noury away and gone from the start it was Donna that found herself trailing Rob Elliott after one 2.5 kilometres lap with both on course to break the hour. By three kilometres she had caught Elliott and left him, with both walkers walking well up on their recent performances.

Going through the half way point in around 29.45 for 5 kilometres, Donna had a lead of around 30 metres over Elliott and under her previous best for that distance. Looking smooth she continued to open up the gap and walking a slightly quicker second half she crossed the line in 59.21, taking almost four minutes off her time set in the corresponding race last year.

Race winner Le Noury had crossed the line in 54.29, with Elliott, still with a shout of getting under the hour with a lap to go, faded to finish nine seconds outside but pleased to get that close again.

Fourth place went to Kevin Le Noury just breaking 70 minutes, with the next three home Peter Beckerleg, MIck Le Sauvage and Wendy Wilson all finishing close together. Newcomer Wendy Wilson, after only a handful of races removed over 5 minutes off her previous best time with a time of 1.13.07. Jayne Le Noury walked under her target time to bring home the field in the longer race.

In the 5 kilometres walk Olga Le Noury finished first in 36.14, ahead of Kay Coulson.

Bob Wright Handicap Series Race Three

3,000 metres track walk

Osmond Priaulx, Footes Lane, Guernsey

Le Sauvage leads Series

Mick Le Sauvage leads the Bob Wright Handicap Series after three of the seven races completed. His sixth place in the latest race gives him a two point lead over Peter Beckerleg and Donna Allan.

A windy morning greeted the walkers with the fastest Stuart Le Noury walking through the field to cross the line first from his position of last walker to start. His actual time of 14.36 gave him the handicap win from Dave Dorey. Dave’s 22.11 actual time was almost a minute up on his last performance.

Third place went to Rob Elliott only five seconds ahead of first woman Donna Allan. A closely packed race had positions 2 to 9 separated by only 35 seconds.

There were consistent times in comparison to recent walks from relative newcomers Wendy Wilson and Kevin Allan , both coping well in the conditions.

At the other end of the scale, Kevin Le Noury, with over forty years experience, walked his first race as an M60 with a time slower than expected.

Peter Kendal Pairs Trophy 3 kilometres road walk

Les Amarreurs, Vale, Guernsey

Stuart and Wendy paired for Peter Kendal win

The pairing of Stuart Le Noury and newcomer Wendy Wilson were over a minute too good for the other teams in this perhaps unique Peter Kendal event. Second place went to Donna Allan and Olga Le Noury both walking good races, with third place going to the experienced Rob Elliott and newcomer Kevin Allan.

Wendy Wilson had the walk of the day walking much quicker than in her last few races to cover the 3 kilometres in 20.54. Stuart had the quickest time of the day at the shorter distance with a 7.20 clocking on what was a hard day to race with a head on wind up the longest part of the course. There was a smile from Wendy as this was the first time she had ever won a trophy in any sport.

Walkers are paired together with the entrants split between the faster and slower walkers in the race.

The teams start on handicap based on the slower walkers predicted times with the faster walker walking behind their teammate for half of the race, before all setting off at their own pace, resulting in a 3 kilometres result for the slower walkers and a 1.5 kilometres result for the faster. The faster walkers have their race predicted handicap added on at the finish.

Piette Trophy

3.8 miles handicap walk

Rocquaine Bay, Guernsey

From last to first

Scratch walker Dave Dorey may well have thought he was on his way to another Piette Trophy handicap win over 3.8 miles as he still led the race along the Rocquaine coast road with a couple of hundred yards still to go. Peter Beckerleg thought otherwise as he sidestepped Dave and overtook him to gain the lead and head for the win himself. But with the sound of fast closing footsteps he had to give second best to last man to start Stuart Le Noury who crossed the line first with an actual time of 30.34.

Beckerleg held on to second place with no response from the long time leader Dorey.

Last years winner Rob Elliott finished close to his time of last year but found himself back in fourth place. First woman home was Olga Le Noury beating her old best time and finishing in under 43 minutes, ahead of second woman Kay Coulson. Husband and wife Kevin and Jayne Le Noury finished in seventh and eight places.

The next walk is the 9th race in the Heritage Championships over a distance of 10 kilometres at Delancey Park at 9.30 am. It will soon be the longest walk in the clubs calendar when walkers take part in the annual Church to Church Walk over 19.4 miles on September 3rd.
