Beckerleg strengthens challenge for Bob Wright Series win

Second place Peter Beckerleg strengthened his challenge for the overall win in the Bob Wright Handicap Series with one race to go. He was beaten on the day only by Stuart Le Noury who walked from starting last to crossing the line first with an actual time of 7.28.

Third place went to Kay Coulson a few seconds down on second place.

After two race discards are taken into consideration in the seven race series Beckerleg and Donna Allan are favourites with Stuart Le Noury and Rob Elliott also in with a shout should they finish the last race well up the field.

The last event is a 5 mile race from Lancresse to White Rock in February.

Winner Stuart Le Noury won the inaugural Richmond Trophy for 2016 based on the years performances in all local races, presented at the recent club dinner and presentation.

Personal best for race winner

Donna Allan, who has improved rapidly since her first race last September, surpassed all expectations as she broke 30 minutes and removed a huge amount of time off her previous best of 34.14. Set off with Phil Lockwood on handicap, she soon moved ahead of him and started to make inroads on those set off in front of her. Hitting the front with still plenty of the race left she crossed the line in an actual time of 29.53. This time was a new age best time for Guernsey, beating that set by Jenny Elliott some years ago.

Second home, also with a performance better than expected was Peter Beckerleg in an actual time of 33.30. A close finish for third was won by Rob Elliott who had to find a sprint to overcome Phil Lockwood. Lockwoods glance behind leading him to try to hold off his rival with his own short lived final effort.

Second woman to finish was Jayne Le Noury, holding off Mick Le Sauvage for fifth place.

Marie Macdonald had a good race overtaking Kay Coulson and Dave Dorey. After five races in the series and with two to go Donna Allan and Peter Beckerleg are in the first two positions but with a lot still to walk for.

Newham won a close match providing the first two walkers across the line, with Mike Scamell winning by 10 seconds from Geoff Robinson.

After 2 kilometres a group of 5 had broken away, Scamell, Robinson and Sheppard from Newham and locals Rob Elliott and Andy Le Heron. At half way Scamell and Robinson were battling for first place with Sheppard 11 seconds behind. Elliott was walking steadily a further 5 seconds down and had a chance of splitting the leading trio. When all scorers had gone past the 5 kms point the team scores were level. Rob Elliott moved into third in the sixth kilometre, but team mate Steven Kendal retired, leaving the team match in the balance with Newham eventually taking the win by three points.

Bob Wright Handicap Series Race Four

2 kilometres road walk

Pleinmont, Guernsey

Lockwood takes the honours

Phil Lockwood held on to win the fourth race in the Bob Wright Handicap Series from the faster finishing Rob Elliott when he crossed the line seven seconds ahead in the 2 kilometres event. The race, held in good conditions on the undulating car free out and back course from the Imperial had the walkers working hard.

Second placed Elliott gained a few points in the final metres as he overtook Peter Beckerleg and Mick Le Sauvage.

Fifth placed Donna Allan, not quite at the speed of her recent races still broke the Guernsey Age best time held by Julie Lawlor from many years ago with an actual time of 12.27.

After four races Donna leads the series from Peter Beckerleg, with Stuart Le Noury in third place. The series resumes in 2017 with three more races. Olga Le Noury held off father in law Kevin Le Noury back in seventh and eighth places. Last to finish was Stuart Le Noury with his 11.11 actual time recording the fastest time of the day.

Special mention to Dave Dorey in fifth place. Club stalwart Dave, sometime during this year reached the milestone of 50 years as a competitor in race walking. He competed for Guernsey in the 1970 Commonwealth Games over 20 miles and has won the prestigious Guernsey Church to Church walk . At his best he walked a sub 7 minutes mile. His 10 miles time stood at 80.15, 20 kms at 1.42.28 and 50 kms at 4.42.10.

A profile on Dave Dorey and his achievements can be found at https://walkguernsey.wordpress.com/sportsman-champions-profiles/dave-dorey/.

The next walk is on Sunday December 11th at 9.00 am. The walk is over 815 metres up the Val des Terres hill climb. All are welcome to come and have a go. Details from Jayne Le Noury, lenouryjedburgh@cwgsy.net.

Big personal best time for leading woman

Donna Allan (photo) continues to take big steps forward since taking up race walking. In her latest race over 10 kilometres at North Side, held in good conditions after the storms of the previous 12 hours, she crossed the line in 1 hour 3 minutes and 13 seconds to remove almost three and a half minutes off her previous best time.

A good day for the women saw Olga Le Noury and Jayne Le Noury  both walking quicker than their last race. The winner of the race was Stuart Le Noury, walking well up on his last race to finish in 54.33. He had a clear win from Rob Elliott back in second place. The third man Phil Lockwood was separated by the leading woman and finished fourth overall.

Kevin Le Noury was another to perform above expectations, with a time a couple of minutes up on expected . The other walkers to finish Peter Beckerleg and Mick Le Sauvage walked to form with Marie Macdonald having to record a  “did not finish”.

Stuart Le Noury will race the London marathon next year, taking the place that the Sarnia Walking Club are entitled too as members of “englandathletics”.

On a personal note (Rob Elliott) . Woke up this morning to see this link

It is from the 1982 Commonwealth Games in which I raced 30 kms in 2.24.28. Turned up for this 10 kms race this morning at North Side to find one of the roads closed to cars and pedestrians. So we used the extended course on which the Guernsey walkers used for the trials back then.

Back then I averaged 48.20 for a final 2.25.00 course and Guernsey record. Today I slipped back to 61 minutes!
