5 kilometres road walk

Cambridge Park, Guernsey

Stuart Le Noury wins again

Stuart Le Noury was first over the line in the Sarnia Walking Clubs 5 kilometres walk at Cambridge Park. After his slower opening kilometres with two kilometres reached in 10.29, he increased the pace to record 5.09, 5.02 and 4.59 for the final three to cross the line in 25.39. Isolated second and third places went to Phil Lockwood in 32.46 and Kevin Le Noury 34.35.

The race for fourth was won by Peter Beckerleg, who had the close company of Dave Dorey for more than half of the race. Dorey looked like getting caught by Mick Le Sauvage with one kilometre to go but perhaps sensing the challenge increased his pace to pull clear by ten seconds at the finish for fifth place.

The two women Olga and Jayne Le Noury strolled around the course together in just over 42 minutes.

The next walk is the first race in the Bob Wright Handicap Series over a distance of 5 kilometres at Saumarez Park at 9.00 am on Sunday September 30th. All are welcome to come and have a go.

Church to Church 19.4 miles

Sunday September 2nd 2018

Sarnia Walking Club

ABN-AMRO Private Banking Church to Church 19.4 miles walk

South Esplanade, St Peter Port, Guernsey

Third win for Stuart in traditional Church to Church walk

Stuart Le Noury walked to his third overall win in the annual Church to Church walk over 19.4 miles in a walk sponsored by ABN-AMRO Channel Islands Ltd. His winning time of 3 hours 11.24 was his second quickest time and walked in conditions that grew hotter as the race progressed.

Out on his own and unchallenged throughout the walk he had built up a lead of almost 5 minutes by the 4 miles point at the airport after walking from the South Esplanade and up the twisting hills and lanes via Cornet Street and Les Vardes, passing St Martins Church on the way through.

Rob Elliott had settled into second place and walking steadily had a lead over third men Phil Lockwood and Ian Torode, a visitor in his first Church walk, of nearly four minutes at the same point.

Leading woman Wendy Wilson passed by in 49 minutes with a 50 seconds lead over Ana Sahati. The expected leading woman Donna Allan, the Sarnia Walking Club Champion, was sidelined and had to be a frustrated spectator on doctors orders after an untimely recent visit to the hospital.

After walking on to Torteval and through the ups and down hill sections to St Peters and St Saviours, Le Nourys lead increased as he passed the ten miles point at Les Vauxbalets in 1.35.45. Elliott, as last year hit that distance in a shade over 1 hour 50 minutes but was to soon start struggling with his pace noticeably slowing soon afterwards.

Other competitors were relatively close together with local Phil Lockwood, Ian Torode and Glyn Jones all in with a chance of third place going into the final miles.

Stuart, still well in control went through 15 miles at the Vale Church in around 2 hours 22 minutes and only slowing slightly claimed a convincing victory back in St Peter Port after negotiating the crowds at the Sea Front Sunday and on to the finish at South Esplanade.

Elliott was still walking at his reduced pace as he glanced at the clock at Vale Church showing around 2 hours 50 minutes, thinking back to the days when he would reach the finish in that sort of time.

As conditions got hotter the walkers were sorting themselves out with Glyn Jones from Coventry Godiva, with a few Church walks under his belt claimed third place in 3.48.46. A couple of minutes behind was Ian Torode, a race walker from the south west of England, who held off Phil Lockwood by another few minutes.

Stephen Cartwight, another first time competitor from Colchester and Tendring finished in 6th place in 3.55.23, ahead of regular visitor Sean Pender from Enfield in 3.57.27. Past winner and another regular walker to Guernsey events, Ed Shillabeer added another finish to his total with his slowest time in the walk, finishing in over 4 hours for 9th place. His best time was a winning 2.40.58 back in 1989. Ed recently walked for 11 hours in a 24 hours walk.

Isle of Man walker, now working in Guernsey, John James Cooper finished in 4 hours 21.05. It was his first Guernsey walk but he has completed the Isle of Man version of the Guernsey race three times, with their distance being much further at 85 miles.

Regular visitor David Hoben struggled in the closing stages but crossed the line for another finish in 4 hours 36. Less than five minutes behind was first local woman Ana Sahati with a winning time of 4.41.25. Second woman was regular local walker Wendy Wilson, walking much further than she has done before and struggling in the second half of the race. To her credit, she held on to finish as second woman in 4.56.41 and now has a trophy to show to her father Roger Brehaut who walked to second place in 1955 with a time of 3 hours 27 minutes in front of a big crowd at the finish.

Today saw the end of a competitive streak by stalwart Kevin Le Noury. He first walked the event back in 1976 and was a winner of the Victory Cup for the first Channel Islander to finish back in 1987 and until today was an ever present on the start and finish line. Today he was officiating.

Piette Trophy 3.8 miles (approx) handicap road walk

Rocquaine Bay, Guernsey

Elliott cruises to second Piette Trophy win

Rob Elliott secured his second win in the annual Piette Trophy handicap walk, adding to his win two years ago. The small field off walkers contested the race in hot conditions on the two lap out and back course along the coast road at Rocquaine, aided by a welcome sea breeze.

Rob passed Kay Coulson, first away and leading the race with half a mile to go and with a watchful eye on quickest in the field Stuart Le Noury coming the other way, soon worked out that victory was secure.

Kay held on to second place ahead of Phil Lockwood.

The next club race is the final one in the Heritage Group Championships over one mile. Moving ahead to September, the annual Church to Church 19.4 miles walk will take place  on Sunday September 2nd starting at 9.00 am at South Esplanade. The route passing all the Parish Churches is open to all walkers and has a generous time limit of 5 hours 30 minutes. Donna close to Guernsey womens best time

On a warm humid morning Donna Allan walked to within a minute of the best time set by a Guernsey woman for the 20 kilometres distance. A good start by Donna on the eight lap circuit saw her go through 5 kilometres in just under 30 minutes and 10 kilometres in 60.28 and on pace to get close to the time of 2.02.16 set by Katrine Thomson ten years ago. Donna hit a bad patch moving through to the 15 kilometres point which saw her lose a valuable minute with a time of 92.15. Picking up the pace in the final quarter of the race she crossed the line in 2.03.07.

In the mens section it was seven wins out of seven starts for Stuart Le Noury as he walked to another easy win with his 1.52.07, after passing half way in 54.46. Third overall was Phil Lockwood in 2.19.31 with second woman home Olga Le Noury not far off her personal best time holding off Kevin Le Noury.

Stuart Le Noury recorded his best time for 5,000 metres for a good few years as he ducked under 25 minutes for an easy win over Rob Elliott. Third place went to Phil Lockwood who continues to get back towards his old form, removing another minute off his last race at the distance. All competitors managed to improve on their last race, making the most of the warm evening conditions.

Remarkably in the handicap section of the event the finishing order was the same as in the actual race.

With a time slower than would normally be expected, Stuart Le Noury had another easy win over 10 kilometres in the fifth race of the Heritage Group Championships. Rob Elliott finished in second place, slightly quicker than in his last race, with Donna Allan taking third place overall and leading woman.

Donna was the other walker in the race having taken part in the longer event the day before. Phil Lockwood, another quicker than his last race continues to improve after suffering with injury not so long ago.

Kay Coulson, the second woman held off Mick Le Sauvage for fifth place with Dave Dorey completing the line up finishing in just over 80 minutes.

In the handicap section of the race Kay Coulson finished in first place ahead of Phil Lockwood.

5th annual Sean Pender Trophy

2,000 metres handicap walk

Osmond Priaulx, Footes Lane, Guernsey

Victory and new record for Donna Allan

Falling short by five seconds of breaking the womens Guernsey best track time over 2,000 metres in last weeks Championship walk, Donna Allan made no mistake this week shattering the old best time of 11 minutes dead by 17 seconds to record 10.43. Previous record holder Jenny Elliott, as Jenny Tostevin back in 1985 still holds on to the road record of 10.42, only a second quicker.

In doing so Donna claimed victory by ten seconds in the 5th annual Sean Pender handicap walk. Second home was Phil Lockwood, walking faster than last week and ahead of third placed Wendy Wilson who walked a good 13.14 in her first 2,000 metres event.

Olga Le Noury, only a few seconds short of her best ever time, set off with Kevin Le Noury and turned the tables position wise with last weeks walk, to beat her father in law by a second.

Mick Le Sauvage held off the faster finishing Rob Elliott for 6th place, with race sponsor and visitor Sean Pender finishing in eighth place. Fastest time of the day was set by the next man home Stuart Le Noury with his 9.23, with last man home John Dedman completing the line up.

Thanks go to Sean Pender, a regular visitor to Guernsey whose trophy bears his name, who gave prizes to the leading walkers in the handicap race as well as spot prizes.
