4th annual Sean Pender Trophy

Osmond Priaulx Playing Fields, Guernsey

SAM_3401Dave leads from start to finish.

Dave Dorey (left) walked to victory in the the fourth annual Sean Pender (right) Trophy handicap race with an untroubled win. Set off first he had his best race for some time with the rest off the field unable to get near him.

Rob Elliott, second across the line, thought momentarily that the win was his as he closed in on Mick Le Sauvage and Jayne Le Noury with 100 metres to go before noticing that Dave was well ahead and metres from the finish. He finished 23 seconds behind the winner with third placed Donna Allan a few seconds behind. Donna recorded another personal best time over the distance, staying relatively close to Elliott after he had made up his 15 seconds handicap within the first lap.

Stuart Le Noury recorded the fastest time of the day in 6th place with an actual time of 9.34. Phil Lockwood got the better of Kevin Le Noury for seventh, whilst race sponsor Sean Pender brought up the rear. Thanks go to visitor Sean Pender whose name the race is under but also supplies awards to the first three to finish and the fastest male and female walkers on the day.

Double win for Donna Allan

Donna Allan took the individual win and was part of the team win in the 50th annual Graham Mann Memorial Trophy over a handicapped start 3 kilometres. The team of Stuart Le Noury and Rob Elliott finished in third and fourth place but with Peter Beckerleg only a stride behind he had done enough with his team mate Donna Allan to take first place in the team section.

Sixth place went to Mick Le Sauvage who had been on the winning team almost 50 years ago in the second edition of the event. Kevin Le Noury brought the walkers home with his 19.53 actual time.

Only 19 seconds separated the three teams at the end.

Donna Allan first home

Donna Allan and Phil Lockwood took the honours in the second race of the clubs Championships. First overall was Donna Allan in 32.17, ahead of Lockwoods 33.26. Expected winner of the mens section, perhaps mindful of the upcoming London marathon walked to third place in the mens section, behind father Kevin.

Two minutes down on the leading woman was Olga Le Noury, ahead of Jayne Le Noury in third.

The club are sad to report the recent passing of past treasurer Hazel Mann in her 89th year. Hazel and her late husband Austin were treasurer and secretary of the Sarnia Walking Club for many years. Hazel had continued to sponsor the trophy held in memory of Austins relation, namely the Graham Mann team trophy.

Win number eight

Stuart Le Noury raced to his eighth Eric Waldron title over the two miles track distance with an easy win in the latest race. Dominating from the start he lapped the field to finish in 15.23, only four seconds behind his personal best time set a few years ago. Second home was Rob Elliott, himself a multiple winner of this event many years back.

Third place went to Donna Allan in 19.01, adding a new Guernsey age best to her recent collection. The time was the third fastest by a local woman, behind times set by Jenny Elliott and sister Kathryn Tostevin in this now rarely walked distance.

Youngest walker Ellis Lockwood made a good effort in the closing laps to close down Kay Coulson, with Coulson only just holding on by a second.

He donated the trophy to the GIAAC 53 years ago in 1964, which in turn was passed on to the SWC in 1970. Inaugural winner of the 2 miles track (grass track at Cambridge Park) walk was Len Duquemin winning narrowly from John Moullin, both given the same time of 16.09.1. Duquemin improving his time to 14.46.5 in 1966, which until 2009 was the Guernsey Allcomers Record for a 2 miles track walk, until Carl Thomson walked 14.40.4.

The event moved to the roads after that from 1969 to 2002. From 2003 the race has moved back to a track walk for most years to 2017.

Len Duquemin`s track time has frequently been surpassed with winning times on the road. Walker’s fastest winning times in this race are, Rob Waterman 14.30 in 1969, Andy Le Heron 14.15 in 1972, Mick Elliott 14.33 in 1974, Rob Elliott 13.58 in 1981, Mark Elliott 13.56 in 1985, Carl Thomson 14.02 in 1990, Jason Le Noury 15.10 and Stuart Le Noury 15.19.

Fastest time for the event is by Mark Elliott in 13.56 (1995). Youngest winner is Jason Le Noury at 15 years old in 2004. The walk has once been won by a woman, Jenny Elliott in 1999 and once had a tie for first place between local Kevin Le Noury and visitor Sean Pender.

Double for Kay Coulson

Almost always putting in a quick performance in these team races, Kay Coulson secured double success as she led the field home in the one mile handicapped walk at Les Amarreurs finishing with an actual time of 10.50. In very windy conditions the long straight road from near Donkey Divers to the sea at Les Amarreurs  was full head on wind before turning along the coast to be faced with side on wind before the relative calm around Vale Church.

In the team event for the Philadelphia Trophy she was joined by 4th placed Jayne Le Noury and 7th placed Dave Dorey for a combined total watch time of 34.52. But it was close. The second team of Kevin Le Noury, Olga Le Noury and Peter Beckerleg only three seconds behind.

Leading woman Donna Allan over the longer distance walked on Sunday, equalled her recent personal best time of 1 hour 3 minutes and 13 seconds in her latest outing over 10 kilometres. On a cold and windy morning over the near seven lap course at Les Amarreurs she set off cautiously going through the 2,500 metres point in 16.15 before knocking out a succession of ever faster 1500 metres laps, from 9.42, 9.36, 9.25, 9.08 to a finishing 9.07.

Stuart Le Noury, contesting the longer distance had his best race for a while finishing in 52 minutes dead. His split times after the opening 2,500 metres of 13.04 were 7.56, 7.56, 7.56 down to 7.41 and 7.27.

Phil Lockwood managed only 5,500 metres before his back problem forced him to retire.

In the 5 kilometres race, Kevin Le Noury led home Peter Beckerleg with a time of 33.39. Third home and first woman was Olga Le Noury in 34.51. Mick Le Sauvage, Jayne Le Noury and Dave Dorey completed the line up.

Beckerleg strengthens challenge for Bob Wright Series win

Second place Peter Beckerleg strengthened his challenge for the overall win in the Bob Wright Handicap Series with one race to go. He was beaten on the day only by Stuart Le Noury who walked from starting last to crossing the line first with an actual time of 7.28.

Third place went to Kay Coulson a few seconds down on second place.

After two race discards are taken into consideration in the seven race series Beckerleg and Donna Allan are favourites with Stuart Le Noury and Rob Elliott also in with a shout should they finish the last race well up the field.

The last event is a 5 mile race from Lancresse to White Rock in February.

Personal best for race winner

Donna Allan, who has improved rapidly since her first race last September, surpassed all expectations as she broke 30 minutes and removed a huge amount of time off her previous best of 34.14. Set off with Phil Lockwood on handicap, she soon moved ahead of him and started to make inroads on those set off in front of her. Hitting the front with still plenty of the race left she crossed the line in an actual time of 29.53. This time was a new age best time for Guernsey, beating that set by Jenny Elliott some years ago.

Second home, also with a performance better than expected was Peter Beckerleg in an actual time of 33.30. A close finish for third was won by Rob Elliott who had to find a sprint to overcome Phil Lockwood. Lockwoods glance behind leading him to try to hold off his rival with his own short lived final effort.

Second woman to finish was Jayne Le Noury, holding off Mick Le Sauvage for fifth place.

Marie Macdonald had a good race overtaking Kay Coulson and Dave Dorey. After five races in the series and with two to go Donna Allan and Peter Beckerleg are in the first two positions but with a lot still to walk for.
